Latin America Clean Energy Coalition launches its Brazil agenda to identify barriers and opportunities for industrial decarbonization

The Federation of Industries of the State of Alagoas (FIEA), Senai Alagoas, and WRI Brazil signed a Letter of Intent this Tuesday (9/1) with the Latin America Clean Energy Coalition (LACEC), aimed at developing market-based solutions for industrial decarbonization.
The agreement marks the start of Lacec’s work in Brazil and includes, among other actions, studies, partner mobilization, and public-private dialogue to boost industry’s use of renewable potential.
The cooperation covers sources such as renewable energy, bioenergy, biomethane, advanced biofuels, and low-carbon hydrogen.
The signing took place during the event “Dialogue on the Future of Clean Energy for Brazilian Industry,” in Maceió (AL).
Lacec has already launched similar efforts in Mexico and Colombia. Alagoas was chosen to build a Brazilian energy transition agenda based on the assessment that the Northeast holds the country’s greatest wind and solar potential, along with an established sugar-energy sector capable of scaling up bioenergy.
A study commissioned by the Powershoring Forum indicates that the Northeast could attract around US$60 billion in investment by 2035, boosting GDP by 3.6%, with US$10.5 billion coming from energy-intensive production chains.
“Alagoas is the starting point, the Northeast is the natural scale for this work, and the ambition is national. Lacec is coming to Brazil to bring these players together and tackle, in practical terms, the barriers that still limit industry’s access to clean, competitive energy,” says Mirela Sandrini, executive director of WRI Brazil.
Sandrini believes the lessons learned in the northeastern state will help shape the coalition’s priorities for Brazil.
The goal is to use Alagoas industry’s concrete experience to identify the main bottlenecks and opportunities for expanding the productive sector’s access to clean energy solutions in the country.
Topics include financing, infrastructure, the regulatory environment, project development, and the conditions needed for new solutions to be technically and economically viable.
The partnership also aligns with the Alagoas Industry Strategic Map 2025–2032, which identifies sustainability, innovation, and energy transition among the priorities for strengthening the state’s industrial competitiveness.
For José Carlos Lyra de Andrade, president of Fiea, the initiative makes it possible to turn Alagoas’s energy potential into concrete opportunities for the productive sector.
“Through Lacec, we will expand dialogue, connect companies and institutions, and the Senai innovation network, to develop sustainable solutions that strengthen the competitiveness of the productive sector while we advance the decarbonization agenda,” he explains.
